MOTHER

MY MOTHER HAS HAD ALZHEIMERS FOR TEN YEARS. IN THE BEGINNING, MOTHER WAS A HEALTHY, VIBRANT, AND SOCIAL PERSON. SHE MADE THE BEST PECAN PIE, IT WAS ABSOLUTELY HEAVENLY. SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A VERY CHRISTIAN LADY WHO CARED SO MUCH ABOUT THE WELL BEING OF OTHERS, ALWAYS PUTTING THEIR NEEDS BEFORE HERS.

AS THE ALZHEIMERS PROGRESSED HER SOCIAL CAPABILITIES DECLINED AS DID HER ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING. SHE WAS ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO HER FAMILY'S NEEDS AND AS HER MIND DETERIORATED, MY SISTER SUSAN AND I BECAME HER CAREGIVER.

SHE IS NOW IN THE SEVERE STAGES OF ALZHEIMERS AND REQUIRES FULL TIME NURSING CARE IN A LONG TERM FACILITY. HER PHYSICAL ABILITIES ARE LIMITED, BUT SHE CAN STILL AMBULATE AND DANCE A LITTLE. SHE LOVES HER MUSIC, AND MOST OF ALL LOVES ELVIS PRESLEY. HER SHORT AND LONG TERM MEMORY IS MOSTLY FADED WHICH IS THE HARDEST THING FOR HER FAMILY TO DEAL WITH. WE WONDER WHERE OUR CARING AND LOVING MOTHER HAS GONE AND WHAT SHE THINKS OF NOW.

HER PERSONALITY IS ONE OF HAPPINESS AND LOVE AND THIS SONG, "FADING MEMORIES" IS DEDICATED TO MY DEAR MOTHER. IT DESCRIBES THE HEARTBREAK OF A FADING MEMORY.
